چکیده

Incidence of stroke throughout the years A recent systematic review of 56 studies from all over the world show that the stroke incidence and early case fatality reported in these studies change over time. They indicate a fall in high-income countries by 42%, but an increase in low-middle income countries by as much as 100%.[2] This contrasting trend leads to the situation that the estimated overall incidence of stroke is currently higher in the in low-middle income countries compared to high-income countries. However, these aggregated data from studies with different methodologies do not show time trends within the same populations and we have to dive into the literature.

Outcome of patients with stroke admitted in stroke care unit and Neurologic

Introduction: Admission of patients with severe National Institutes of health stroke scale (NIHSS Score>16) or moderate (NIHSS 8 through 16) acute stroks is different. Taking care of stroke patients admitted in stroke unit care (SCU) is costly. In comparison with admission in general neurology ward, we assessed the outcome of such patients based on stroke care unit (SCU) versus general neurol...

Decline in US stroke mortality: an analysis of temporal patterns by sex, race, and geographic region.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although stroke mortality rates have declined rapidly over the past 30 years, the decline has slowed to a plateau. Here, we assess whether the race-sex-region groups have participated equally in this decline and whether there are groups in which stroke mortality rates are still declining, and we predict how these rates will eventually differ. METHODS Data on stroke mort...

Association of cognitive functioning, incident stroke, and mortality in older adults.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Stroke increases the risk of dementia; however, bidirectional association of incident stroke and cognitive decline below dementia threshold is not well established. Also, both cognitive decline and stroke increase mortality risk. METHODS A longitudinal population-based cohort of 7217 older adults without a history of stroke from a biracial community was interviewed at 3...

Trajectory of functional decline before and after ischemic stroke: the Northern Manhattan Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Previous research in our cohort showed a delayed decline in functional status after first ischemic stroke. We compared the long-term trajectory of functional status before and after ischemic stroke. METHODS The Northern Manhattan Study contains a prospective, population-based study of stroke-free individuals age ≥40 years, followed for a median of 11 years. The Barthel ...

Secular trends in stroke incidence and mortality. The Framingham Study.

BACKGROUND The reduction in US stroke mortality has been attributed to declining stroke incidence. However, evidence is accumulating of a trend in declining stroke severity. METHODS We examined secular trends in stroke incidence, prevalence, and fatality in Framingham Study subjects aged 55-64 years in three successive decades beginning in 1953, 1963, and 1973. RESULTS No significant declin...

Decline in US stroke mortality. Demographic trends and antihypertensive treatment.

Stroke mortality has been falling rapidly in this country since 1973. To investigate age-race-sex effects on stroke mortality, we studied US vital statistics during 1950-1972 and 1973-1981 in 55-64-, 65-74-, and 75-84-year-old race-sex groups. The accelerated rate of decline in stroke mortality since 1973 has had a substantial public health impact, with greater than 200,000 fewer stroke deaths ...
